GA: Personal info of Fulton Co. workers given out in mix-up

Posted on November 8, 2013 by Dissent

Aungelique Proctor reports:

FOX 5 has learned a couple of hundred government employees could have had their Social Security numbers given out during open enrollment.

Ammie Jones said she was startled when she saw total (sic) the names of strangers listed as the beneficiaries on her life insurance policy.

“It was someone else’s name,” Jones said. “It wasn’t my name, my husband’s or my daughters’.”

Greg Fann, the executive director of the Fulton County employees union, said he received several calls from members who had life insurance policies with AETNA.  Fann said employees are fearful the mix-up could compromise their private information.

“They were concerned because these people are not the people I want to leave my life insurance with if something should happen to them, but they were also concerned about whether or not their information was being compromised in terms of Social Security numbers,’ said Fann.

A spokesperson for Fulton County government told FOX 5 that the internet open enrollment was shut down once as the problem was discovered. County officials said the finance department is working (sic) Aetna and Benefits Harbor to investigate the cause of the issue and to ensure that the vendors correct the issue as expeditiously as possible.

Because of the problem, open enrollment has been extended until November 13.

Reading the above, I note that there’s no actual report that Social Security numbers were exposed to others, but that it’s a concern. So far, it seems that names were exposed. We’ll need to get more info on this one to understand the scope of the exposure.
