Erik Sandoval reports that WKMG received a viewer tip about Bright House Cable customer information found behind Jaguar, Inc. Jaguar is a contractor for Bright House Cable in Altamonte Springs.
The work orders exposed the names, addresses and other personal information of dozens of customers.
Bright House provided a statement to WKMG:
“Bright House Networks requires companies we contract with to protect all customer information,” the company said in a statement. “We routinely inspect these companies, including their practices of safe document disposal. We are working closely with the contractor to investigate the incident.”
If they really do routinely inspect contractors for document disposal, I’m favorably impressed. Companies should be doing that, whether data are digital or paper, but I suspect that although most companies may have provisions in their contracts, few actually do inspect or verify.
