Ca: City of White Rock notification of possible privacy breach

Posted on May 22, 2015 by Dissent

This is a formal notification of a possible breach of privacy that occurred March 7, 2015 at the City of White Rock.

(05/22/2015) White Rock, BC – It was discovered on March 8, 2015 that four hard drives were removed from the White Rock Community Centre. It is highly improbable that any data can be recovered due to:

• The data is stored on a proprietary file system and one would need to have:

1) intimate knowledge of the technology involved and significant experience in data architecture and data recovery

2) all the hard drives and not just the four that were removed with an identical device to run the hard drives

The RCMP investigated the incident. A file was also opened with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner who recently completed an investigation on the possibility of a breach of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The City has now added additional security measures to locations that house back-up servers and installed CCTV cameras.

The City does not believe there to be a significant risk to the public from the theft, but the public should be aware that the hard drives contained personal information. The City has received no indication that the thief or thieves made any use of, or attempted to access this information.

If individuals have any indication or concern that their information contained on the hard drives has been accessed or used unlawfully, the City urges them to take appropriate precautions and to contact the City directly at the number below.
