Is this a case of good intentions paving the road to a data protection breach? Can the NHS just transfer a patient’s records to another practice without the patient’s consent, even if they mean well?

NHS bosses have been accused of breaking data protection law by passing on medical records without consent.
Harbottle Surgery in Northumberland closed on Friday. NHS England suggested patients sign up with other practices up to 30 miles (48 km) away.
Some patients have been told their files will be automatically transferred.
NHS England said only vulnerable patients had been moved and working to provide “continuity of care”.
Local councillor Steve Bridgett said he was filing a formal complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
