WWMT reports that Borgess Rheumatology is notifying approximately 700 patients who received letters intended for other patients. The mailing error occurred on December 9, 2015, and the medical practice learned of their error on December 10 and began contacting affected patients.
According to a statement the news channel received, the letters contained names of patients and the fact they seek treatment at Borgess Rheumatology, but did not contain any Social Security numbers.
“Borgess takes patient confidentiality very seriously and we deeply regret that this has occurred,” said Susan McDonald, Borgess Corporate Responsibility Officer & HIPAA Privacy Officer. “We are doing everything we can to notify patients who were impacted by this mistake.”
