Amelia Dickson reports:
A Thurston County judge has set bail at $10,000 for Nicholas W. Perring, an Olympia man suspected of stealing hard drives containing names and Social Security numbers from a federal office.
[…]
According to court documents, Perring is suspected of breaking into four offices, all at 701 Capitol Way S., on two different days. The offices belong to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Child Support Enforcement, the National Federation of Independent Business, the Federal Highway Administration and Lightspeed Retail.
The Olympia Police Department reported that the first burglary occurred on Feb. 5. Several items were taken, including about $600 and two external hard drives from the Office of Child Support Enforcement. Each hard drive contained between 2 million and 5 million individual profiles, which include people’s names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses and phone numbers, according to court documents.
Read more on The Olympian. The suspect allegedly may have had help from his girlfriend, who had formerly been employed in that building and who had been fired for stealing. Her name was not given in the media coverage and it’s not clear if she has been charged with anything.
Of note, so far, I’m not finding any statements or press releases from HHS about the stolen hard drives. KIRO7 reports:
For information about the personal information data stolen, contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at 202-260-6412.
For information about the Federal Investigation contact the U.S. Federal Protective Services at 202-420-1287.
So it’s on those affected to know to call to ask? Has there been any notification to individuals at all? The first burglary was on Feb. 5, so there’s certainly been time to notify.
