A physical therapy clinic in New York is notifying more than 650 patients after a laptop with protected health information was stolen.
KinetoRehab Physical Therapy, PLLC learned of the theft on September 16, and although there was security footage showing the thief, police have not apprehended the thief nor recovered the laptop.
“Patients who were seen for physical therapy from November 2011 to March 2013 may have their personal information, including name, date of birth, address, SS number, insurance information and clinical/physical therapy notes may have been compromised,” Shirley Agapito, DPT, and CEO of KinetoRehab, wrote in a letter sent to patients last week.
To help protect patients, they are offering a complimentary one-year membership of Experian’s® ProtectMyID® Alert or Family Secure® to patients with sensitive information in their file.
New York State agencies and HHS were notified of the incident, as were the police.
The notification to patients does not indicate where the laptop bag was when it was stolen – whether it was on their premises or from an employee’s car or elsewhere. Kineto did not immediately reply to an email inquiry about that. This post will be updated if that information is received.
