Over 45,000 users have left one-star reviews on a company’s Facebook page after the business reported a security researcher to police and had him arrested in the middle of the night instead of fixing a reported bug.
The arrest took place this week in Hungary after an 18-year-old found a flaw in the online ticket-selling system of Budapesti Közlekedési Központ (BKK), Budapest’s public transportation authority.

And while this transpires in Hungary, keep in mind that Justin Shafer remains in jail in Dallas, Texas even though there has been no trial or conviction. Shafer was charged with cyberstalking after he got fed up with what he perceived as harassment by the FBI and he started speaking up publicly to address it. Shafer’s problems started because he found protected health information exposed on public FTP servers and reported it. Instead of owning up and taking responsibility, one such firm (Patterson Dental) allegedly accused Shafer of “hacking” them. As a result, the FBI raided Shafer in May, 2016. Then they raided him again. And again, presumably because some “investigation” suggested he might be conspiring with TheDarkOverlord. To which everyone who knows Shafer muttered “What the HELL?”
Shafer did nothing other than dedicate his energy to exposing public ftp servers that left protected health information exposed. And for this, an embarrassed business tried to paint him as a criminal and the FBI went along with that? Oh come on, FBI, surely you are better than that. Or you should be. #FreeShafer
I’d not seen this before, or have forgotten. Is there any organized efforts to assist him with legal expenses and advice?
