Hackers have cashed out on $143,000 of bitcoin from the massive WannaCry ransomware attack

Posted on August 3, 2017 by Dissent

Ryan Browne reports:

Hackers have cashed out on more than $143,000 worth of bitcoin relating to ransoms paid from the massive WannaCry cyber-attack earlier this year.

Bitcoin payments made by victims of the WannaCry ransomware attack – which totaled 52.2 BTC (around $143,000) – were withdrawn from online wallets overnight.

This was confirmed by Elliptic, a London-based start-up that helps law enforcement authorities track down criminals using the cryptocurrency.

It doesn’t appear they cashed out, just moved funds to other addresses where the bulk of coins still remain.

For example 13AM4VW2dhxYgXeQepoHkHSQuy6NgaEb94 is one of the original payment addresses where there was ~ 9.56 BTC till this morning.

You can track that from there to 1H68h8qsVkMUgY8khcdFpbHV22cCnC74dk
    to 1H68h8qsVkMUgY8khcdFpbHV22cCnC74dk
    to 1Em7vKSqAnFMpejf3fSPSQdxrx99ma856h
where ~7 BTC still remain and the rest was shifted to some other addresses.

I believe this indicates it was not cashed out so much as moved around.
