Illinois dental insurer notifies members after phishing attack

Posted on April 24, 2019 by Dissent

Delta Dental is the largest dental plan system in the United States, composed of 39 member companies.

Today, Delta Dental of Illinois disclosed a security incident affecting an unspecified number of their insured members and dependents. According to the notification signed by their CEO, they recently learned that an employee had fallen prey to a phishing attack last year. As a result, the attacker had access to the employee’s email account between December 21 and December 28. In that account was some members’ protected health information, such as name, address, date of birth, insurance information, and/or Social Security number.

Investigation into the incident was inconclusive as to whether any PHI in the employee’s account was actually accessed, but the insurer is notifying those potentially affected and offering them one year of credit monitoring protection.
