US-based ski and golf resort operator Boyne Resorts has suffered a cyberattack by the WastedLocker operation that has impacted company-wide reservation systems.
Of special note, Abrams points out that WastedLocker has been linked to threat actors known as Evil Corp (aka the Dridex gang)– a group that has been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department. And as the Treasury Department pointed out in a recent advisory, entities that pay ransom to sanctioned entities may run afoul of the U.S. government. That advisory is already having some chilling effects on some companies’ willingness to engage in any negotiations for payment with ransomware operators, according to both Robert Maddox of Debevoise & Plimpton and Scot Lippenholz of Crowdstrike.
