Hacks and zoom-bombings continue to plague educational facilities

Posted on February 14, 2021 by Dissent

Educational settings across countries and age groups continue to be report hacking incidents or zoom-bombing incidents.  Here are just some of the data security headlines I noted over the past few weeks:

In the U.S.:

  • Hundreds of Wimberley ISD students receive racist email in an apparent hack
  • Council Rock Student’s Email Was Hacked, District Says
  • Hackers infiltrate Utah Black Student Union poetry slam with racist messages

And in the UK:

  • Online lessons at Slough secondary school are hacked.  In this case, the headteacher subsequently sent a letter to parents after pupils leaked the Microsoft Teams logins for online lessons leading to two strangers ‘joining’ the lessons last week.
  • Parents were left horrified when an online zoom event for students was hacked by naked men exposing themselves to children.… Six Doncaster schools had been invited to join an ‘author’ event arranged by an external provider yesterday morning.
