Transnet experiencing disruption on its IT network
[Johannesburg; 22 July 2021] Transnet Ltd SOC (“Transnet”) is currently experiencing a disruption in some of its IT applications, and the source of this problem is being identified.
All business continuity plans have been activated. Operations across the Group are continuing, with the Freight Rail, Pipelines, Engineering and Property divisions reporting normal activity.
Port terminals are operational across the system, with the exception of container terminals, as the NAVIS system on the trucking side has been affected. In the Eastern Cape, terminal operations have been halted due to inclement weather conditions, and will continue manually once it is safe to do so.
The Ports Authority continues to operate, and vessels moving in and out of the ports are being recorded manually.
Customers have been made aware of the disruption and are being engaged throughout the process.
Work is underway to reduce the downtime to ensure that the impacted systems are up and running again as soon as possible.

Following unrest last week in KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng, Transnet had shut down some of their operations.
There has been no update on Transnet’s Twitter account since their tweet earlier today, and their web site is currently unreachable, but eNCA reporter Sli Masikane tweeted that she had been reliably informed (by an unnamed source) that this was a hack and that employees had been told to shut down and not to try to access email:
BREAKING #TransnetHack I’ve been reliably informed that Transnet systems have been hacked. All employees received this communication to shutdown all laptop and desktops and not to not access their emails. #eNCA pic.twitter.com/BavupKGMoV
