Regional Cancer Center cyberattack: Ransom demanded, at least 2 million patients’ data stolen (UPDATE 1)

Posted on May 8, 2024 by Dissent

United News of India (UNI) reports on a significant cyberattack on April 30 that has been attributed to Daixin Team (but SEE UPDATE BELOW POST):

In one of the highest volumes of cyberattacks in India, details of 20 lakh patients with the Regional Cancer Center (RCC) here were compromised, affecting 11 out of 14 servers and causing disruptions in many divisions, including the Radiation Department.

The attack compromised the health information of over 20 lakh patients and demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency, sources told UNI.

But there were allegations that the Korean-based cybercriminals successfully infiltrated the data source of RCC and extracted sensitive information of over 80 lakh patients and demanded a ransom of USD 100 millions.

Read more at UNI.

DataBreaches attempted to contact Daixin Team and will update this post when a reply is received. There is nothing on their leak site at this time about any attack on RCC, but it has only been one week since the attack and Daixin Team generally does not rush to claim or announce breaches.  Previous coverage on Daixin Team on DataBreaches can be found linked from here.

UPDATE of May 20, 2024:  Daixin Team responded to DataBreaches’ inquiry with the following statement: “It’s not us. Some North Korean group is imitating us.”  And that’s why it’s so important to attempt to confirm claims.
