Today’s reminder of the insider threat: LG Electronics USA

Posted on October 31, 2024 by Dissent

From a notification sent to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office by external counsel for LG Electronics U.S.A. (LGEUS):

Earlier this month, in the course of investigating certain matters relating to a recent resignation by a (now former) Payroll Manager at LGEUS, the Company determined that the former employee — during the course of their employment and prior to their resignation — sent emails to their personal email account containing the personal information of certain LGEUS and affiliate employees and former employees without authorization in violation of LGEUS’s data privacy and security policies, multiple confidentiality agreements and applicable laws.

On or about September 24, 2024, the former employee resigned. In the course of investigating certain matters relating to the employee’s resignation, LGEUS undertook an investigation in early October, including a review of the former employee’s internal and external correspondence on their LGEUS email account.

On or about October 8, 2024, the Company determined that while still employed with LGEUS, this former employee sent unauthorized emails to their personal email account on September 10, 2024, containing the personal information of certain LGEUS and affiliate employees in violation of LGEUS’s data privacy and security policies, multiple confidentiality agreements and applicable laws.

[…]

After October 8, 2024, the Company continued the investigation to determine the scope of this incident. The Company has made multiple outreach efforts to the former employee and are pursuing legal action. The Company has informed law enforcement of the incident. To date, the Company has not received any reports regarding any unauthorized use of personal information beyond the initial incident. The Company is also offering impacted current and former employees of LGEUS and its affiliates of free credit monitoring services from Experian.

The firm reported that 11 New Hampshire residents may have been affected by the incident; the total number affected was not disclosed.
