For some students in Des Moines, Iowa, the return to school after the winter holidays was soon interrupted by a cyberattack that resulted in classes being canceled.
But as classes continued to be canceled, it became clearer that restoration and recovery would not be quick. By January 11, two days after the announcement of school closure, technicians had made progress, but the district’s 30,000 students were told to expect an offline learning experience until further notice. On January 18, they announced classes would resume on the 19th.
Today, Interim Superintendent Matt Smith confirmed that data was compromised by the cyberattack, but he did not provide actual details. The Des Moines Register reports that the district is still investigating and those affected will receive notification letters.
