Well, it seems one school district has seen the light and will try to be more transparent and timely in the event of security incidents. Norman Public Schools in Oklahoma experienced a ransomware attack in November 2022. At the time, DataBreaches was revealing more details about the breach by the Hive ransomware gang and the leaked data than the district had revealed and noted the district had not responded to this site’s inquiries.
At a board meeting this week, the district indicated it would strive to be more timely and transparent in dealing with the community and media. The Norman Transcript reported on the meeting and statements made to them:
She said previously the district would wait until it received adequate information to tell a complete story before releasing it. Last year’s Hive ransomware attack has made the district reevaluate how it disseminates information.
“Our default was that we needed to wait until we had more information before sharing it,” Kraft said. “After having conversations with families, we realize that we need to be quicker, even if we don’t know a lot.”
