WREG reports:
Memphis Police charged 32 year old Erin Crutcher and 25-year-old Melissa Harris with identity theft trafficking.
They’re accused of stealing the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers of hundreds of Memphis City School students.
Now, Special Agent in Charge Rick Harlow says, the case has been transferred to the Secret Service.
“This is truly identity theft, their identifiers were stolen, and they were being used to make fraudulent returns,” Harlow said.
Harlow says the women stole the identities and then filed fake tax returns using the student’s names and in the process received refunds totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.
It’s still unclear which Memphis City Schools information was compromised or how the women got ahold of it.
Harlow says the Secret Service is still investigating and working with Memphis City Schools to notify the families of potential victims.
