Granville County school officials say confidential employee information was taken when a thief broke into the finance department at the school administration building and stole three laptop computers.
The Henderson Dispatch reported Tuesday that school system employees have been notified and asked to be on the lookout for any signs that their personal information is being used.
The break-in occurred in the early morning hours Thursday.
Okay, wait for it….
School spokesman Stan Winborne says the information on the computers is password protected and is not likely to be accessed by unauthorized individuals.
Yep, it’s always helpful to have a breached entity conduct a risk assessment and issue statements that might dissuade people from acting promptly to protect themselves.
Feh.
Update 1: A statement on Granville County Schools web site says:
In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 2, 2011, a break-in occurred at the central offices of Granville County Schools. During the break-in, the integrity of the offices of finance was breached. As best we can determine, the purpose of the break-in was to get money or equipment to be readily sold for value. To that end, three laptops were stolen. Confidential information was stored on the laptops in the form of social security numbers and payroll information.
We feel that the possibility of unauthorized access to the information is minimal since all information is password protected and access to information does not appear to have been the motive. As a precautionary measure, we do advise all Granville County School employees to be alert to any unusual activity regarding your personal records.
