Ohioans who’ve recently applied for or received unemployment benefits are advised to pay close attention to their bank accounts and other personal information after a computer was stolen from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The department announced on its website that the stolen hard drive possibly contains names, addresses and Social Security numbers of new additions to their system. It may also contain some financial information.

NOTICE: The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating the reported theft of a computer hard drive that possibly contained names, addresses, Social Security numbers and financial information about individuals who applied for or received unemployment compensation. Though we are hopeful that a relatively small number of individuals were impacted, out of an abundance of caution we recommend that all Ohioans who have recently applied for or received unemployment benefits to pay close attention to their bank accounts and other personal accounts. Should ODJFS discover that an individual’s information was compromised, we will contact the individual directly and provide identity theft protection. Claimants with questions should email [email protected].
It doesn’t seem to indicate when the theft occurred. Was this a recent theft or an older theft just recently discovered? I guess we’ll have to wait for more information.
