Just a quick update to the Weather Shield case – where employees have been victims of tax refund fraud for the past three years, although Weather Shield says there is no evidence that they had a breach: so far this year, there have been 24 cases of tax refund fraud.
And for the life of me, I don’t understand why the IRS hasn’t already issued everyone who on the payroll in 2010 and 2011 a PIN to protect themselves so that fraudulent returns aren’t processed. Why wait until these poor folks become victims of ID theft and then issue them a PIN for future returns when you can actually prevent the fraud by flagging their SSN now with a PIN?
Previous coverage of this breach on this blog can be found here, here, here, here, and here.
