Home security system sales pitches were coming too soon and too accurately, hitting new homeowners and their real estate agents immediately after closing.
Realtors smelled a rat. People were getting hit up for ADT Security systems based on private data, clearly. Plus, the ADT Security reseller was making it sound like the buyers’ agents recommended the systems, whether they did or not, and offering Realtors referral fees for sales they made.

“A broker participant (in the MLS) can distribute their own information to whoever they wish, but they are not authorized to distribute anyone else’s data,” he wrote.
MLS staff investigated and discovered an unlicensed assistant who was registered to have access and regularly running searches for closed transactions. The assistant also was an employee of the ADT reseller.
