Helena Public Schools recently notified some current and former employees involved in the after-school student program that their data was on a stolen USB drive.
According to their notification letter, on September 28, 2020, the district discovered that the Lincoln Elementary School building had been burglarized over the previous weekend. Among several items that were stolen was
a portable USB drive which contained scanned copies of timesheets used by current afterschool student program employees and certain former employees dating as far back as February 2017. The time sheets contained full names and, for certain current and former employees, full Social Security numbers.
As of their report to Montana on December 4, 10 Montanans were potentially impacted by the incident. The district did not believe the information on the USB drive was specifically targeted. Although they had no indication of any actual misuse of the data,
they offered those whose SSN was involved access to 12 months of Credit and Identity Monitoring services through IDX®.
