A link to a state Web site was shut down Friday after the discovery that the Social Security numbers of hundreds of Iowa’s top business officials and company board members were accessible by the public.
The numbers – more than 2,000 in total – appeared primarily in corporation reports made to the Iowa secretary of state before 2000. The reports had been scanned and added to the office’s Web site.

The records that were pulled Friday were called to the Register’s attention by national privacy advocate Betty Ostergren of Virginia and West Des Moines resident George Davey. They were also involved last year in exposing the Social Security numbers available at IowaLandRecords.org.
