CA: Enloe ambulance patients’ info stolen from storage bin

Posted on October 23, 2009 by Dissent

Greg Welter reports:

Paperwork containing patient information is missing from a shredding bin at an Enloe Medical Center facility, apparently taken before it could be destroyed.

Laura Hennum, public relations director for the medical center, said the missing paperwork documented ambulance runs made by Enloe approximately between Oct. 8 and 12. The theft was discovered last Tuesday and reported to Chico police.

Possible victims will be able to check their credit and request an alert on fraudulent activity free of charge, Hennum said.

Enloe said it promptly sent out letters to any patients whose personal information may have been compromised. The medical center enters ambulance run information on a computer before the written records are destroyed, and Hennum said the list should be complete.

According to a police report, an unknown suspect took the hinges off a storage container to gain access, then took paperwork from the top of the bin. An Enloe security official who filed the report said all the paperwork included personal identification information.

Hennum said she didn’t know Friday exactly what kind of information could be obtained from the forms. Names and addresses were likely on them, and other items such as Social Security numbers, medical conditions, insurance and Medicare information may also have been recorded.
