Three Brampton men are among nine people charged with province-wide point-of-sale “pin pad” tampering following a joint forces investigation led by the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau.
The investigation started in Parry Sound last November and a group of suspects was soon identified. They were believed responsible for numerous incidents of tampering with credit card terminals across the GTA and Ontario. Investigators said the various retailer targeted were unaware of the fraud, and the illegally-collected debit card information was used.
On Thursday, nine search warrants were executed and police seized stolen “pin pads”, hundreds of forged debit cards encoded with stolen debit card data, computer equipment used to encode magnetic stripes, and more than $100,000 in cash.
Charges were laid under the new Identity Theft Legislation, brought into law on Jan. 8.
