Texan sentenced to prison for ID theft

Posted on December 21, 2010 by Dissent

Trey Lane McCoy was sentenced to 61 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release in connection with an identity theft scheme. In addition, United States District Judge Fred Biery ordered McCoy to pay $33,625.36 restitution.

On September 2, 2010, McCoy pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft and one count of identity theft. By pleading guilty, McCoy admitted that from January 10, 2008 to April 23, 2009, he knowingly executed a scheme to defraud several area financial institutions and businesses by withdrawing funds using fraudulent identification cards and counterfeit checks. On April 23, 2009, authorities executed a search warrant at a Crystal City location where McCoy was residing and discovered McCoy’s six computers which contained over 1,000 digital images of identification documents and checks.

Furthermore, authorities recovered 228 false ID cards, including Texas driver’s licenses, Medicare ID cards, Military ID cards, Drug Task Force ID cards, Postal Inspector ID cards and a U.S. Attorney Generals Office ID card, as well as 259 counterfeit checks in McCoy’s possession.

But where, oh where – or how – did he obtain all of that lovely identity information? Once again, we’re not told….
