The Minnesota Department of Education improperly released the transcripts of 20 students at the online BlueSky Charter School in November, the department acknowledged Friday.
The department uncovered the privacy breach this week while processing a new data request regarding the school, spokeswoman Charlene Briner said. Commissioner Brenda Cassellius, who took over the department in January, released a statement vowing to guard against such missteps in the future.
“In consultation with Governor (Mark) Dayton, I have put in place a new structure that will strengthen internal data policies and procedures to ensure this type of breach will not reoccur under this new administration,” the statement read.

Briner said she could not identify the individual to whom the transcripts were released. The department has alerted the affected students and has not received complaints
from students or parents, she said.
Dan Cook, a BlueSky spokesman, said the school learned of the disclosure this week. “As to how it happened, we don’t know.”
