Nashville Zoo warns of website security breach

Posted on June 25, 2011 by Dissent

The Nashville Zoo sent an email alert to patrons warning of a possible breach in security on the zoo’s website that could result in the theft of customers’ credit card information.

The email said law enforcement officials alerted zoo officials that reports of unauthorized credit card transactions appear to be connected to the zoo’s website. The notice was sent to the zoo’s email database and posted on its website.

Customers were warned that if they had used Nashville Zoo’s website to purchase anything with a credit card in the past 24 months, they should review credit card statements for unauthorized charges.

The undated notice, prominently linked from the zoo’s home page, reads:

NOTIFICATION

Nashville Zoo has been informed by law enforcement officials that reports of unauthorized credit card transactions appear to be connected to the Zoo’s website indicating a breach in security. As a precautionary measure, we are sending this notice to our email database and posting it on our website.

If you have used Nashville Zoo’s website to purchase anything with a credit card in the past 24 months, please carefully review your credit card statements for unauthorized charges. We recommend that you contact your bank and have them issue a new credit card number. Your bank can also answer any questions or issues regarding possible unauthorized credit card charges or theft.

We are currently reconstructing our website, working closely with data security experts to ensure we are utilizing the latest developments in security measures. We anticipate a launch of our new website soon.

We are deeply sorry that this incident has occurred and sincerely apologize to anyone affected by its outcome. As a non-profit organization, Nashville Zoo depends on community support so that we can continue to offer a world-class zoo for Middle Tennessee. As such, we are committed to making sure our guests, our members, and our supporters experience a safe and enjoyable relationship with Nashville Zoo. We appreciate your attention to this issue and ask that you continue to support us.
