Ca: Kiewit laptop theft puts Bull Arm workers’ personal information at risk

CBC News reports:

Construction company Kiewit is warning some employees at the Bull Arm work site to keep an eye on their credit after sensitive information was recently stolen from an employee.

According to the company, personal information was on a laptop computer that was stolen from someone working in Kiewit’s payroll department on April 15.

According to the statement, the laptop was stolen from a parked rental car in Montreal.

On it was personal information that would be found on a T4 slip, including names, social insurance numbers and addresses.

Read more on CBC News. It’s interesting for me to see how much more coverage breaches have been getting in the Canadian news over the past year. Whether this will translate into more provincial legislation requiring disclosure and notification remains to be see. For every company like Kiewat that went public and issued a statement, how many other Canadian entities have had similar breaches but kept silent about it?
