Senators’ letter points out Yahoo!’s lack of cooperation with Congressional investigation of breaches

Posted on February 11, 2017 by Dissent

Amir Nasr reports:

Two Republican senators on Friday pressed Yahoo Inc. Chief Executive Marissa Mayer about her company’s failure to answer questions about data breaches from 2013 and 2014.

“Despite several inquiries by committee staff seeking information about the security of Yahoo! user accounts, company officials have thus far been unable to provide answers to many basic questions about the reported breaches,” Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune (S.D.) and Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance and Data Security Subcommittee Chairman Jerry Moran (Kan.) wrote in a letter to Mayer.

Serious question, is Yahoo under any obligation to answer questions presented in a letter from a representative of Congress? Thus doesn’t appear to be a subpoena.

As I understand it, individual members of Congress who send letters/inquiries are not compelling compliance. If the committee on which the member sits sends an inquiry, then it can be a subpoena or some other process depending on that committee’s rules.
So short answer is “no” but if company doesn’t answer, they may find themselves being compelled to provide even more information.
