U. of Rochester Jones Memorial Hospital impacted by cyberattack

Posted on December 28, 2017 by Dissent

From the hospital’s site, today:

Jones Memorial Hospital is experiencing unexpected computer downtime due to a cyberattack. A limited number of our information services have been affected. However, to the best of our knowledge no patient financial or medical information has been compromised. We have been in contact with law enforcement and the New York State Department of Health since the downtime began.

Our team has continued to deliver high-quality patient care, using the standard computer downtime procedures we regularly train and prepare for. These include manually entering information into patient medical charts while some of our systems are off-line. We are asking patients using JMH services or clinics to bring their insurance card, their complete medications list, and any available medical history with them to any visits.

The issue is isolated to Jones Memorial Hospital’s computer systems. Our information technology staff is partnering with the University of Rochester, as well as the IT departments at Noyes Health and St. James Hospital, to bring our computer systems back to full functionality as soon as possible.

We will post further updates on our website as events warrant and continue to focus on patient safety and quality care as our top priorities.

It’s not clear from their description whether this is a ransomware attack or something else, but perhaps we’ll find out more in the near future. In the interim, they are probably glad they have trained for such disruptions, but asking patients to bring medical history with them doesn’t sound likely to be feasible for most patients.
