Blue Shield of California has disclosed that a ransomware attack on an insurance broker, Team Alvarez Insurance Services, has impacted 2,858 Blue Shield members’ information including names and one or more of the following: health insurance information, health plan member ID number, date of birth, email addresses, phone numbers and physical addresses. No Blue Shield member social security numbers or credit card information was affected.
The ransomware attack was detected on August 25, 2021.
This incident has not shown up on dark web leak site as of the time of this publication. Nor has this site found any other insurers who have issued press releases or statements concerning this incident yet.
DataBreaches.net has sent an inquiry to Team Alvarez to ask how many other insurers and their members were impacted by this incident, who the threat actors were, and whether Team Alvarez will be notifying HHS on behalf of its clients.
