Given destabilization from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and tightening U.S. and EU law enforcement activities, ‘ransomware is on the decline’ proponents underestimate their adversaries’ motivations, resiliency, and abilities to support persistent criminal operations.
RedSense has produced a fact sheet with some sobering ransomware data for 2022 drawn from both U.S. and non-U.S. incidents.
Reading their charts of reported incidents in 2022, it is clear that some ransomware teams have not sworn off attacking the healthcare sector:
Figure 1 lists incidents where responsibility for the attack could be attributed. RedSense also provides a list of U.S. healthcare entities who revealed ransomware attacks in 2022 but where attribution was not made (or has not yet been made):
The fact sheet also identifies incidents in the EU and other data that strongly suggest that ransomware is still a real and serious threat.
