HDFC Bank Data Breach Exposed on Internet? Hacker Leaks Sensitive Information

Posted on March 6, 2023 by Dissent

Siddharth Shankar reports that HDFC Bank has denied any reports of a data leak or breach, despite the fact that data allegedly from them is being made freely available on a popular forum:

One of the largest private sector banks in India, HDFC Bank, has allegedly fallen victim to a data breach. A user on a well known underground hacker forum has posted 7.5GB of HDFC Bank data for download. There is no payment required to download the data, which means the hacker is not really selling the data; in fact, he is giving it away for free.

In response to an inquiry from the news service, the bank issued the following statement:

We wish to state that there is no data leak at HDFC Bank and our systems have not been breached or accessed in any unauthorised manner. We remain confident of our systems. However we treat the matter of our customers data security with utmost seriousness and we continue to monitor bank systems and the ecosystem to ensure the highest standards of data security and safety.

Once again there are claims of a breach involving an Indian entity and a denial of any breach by the entity.
