Turkish Data Leak Scandal: Statements by Minister Uraloğlu and Journalist Haskoloğlu

Posted on September 14, 2024 by Dissent

There’s an update to another distressing “shoot-the-messenger” story where a journalist was arrested for simply reporting on a breach that the government denied (previous background). Now Railly News reports:

The incident was first brought to the agenda by journalist İbrahim Haskoloğlu in 2022. Haskoloğlu was subsequently arrested after reporting that citizens’ personal data had been compromised. At the time, the journalist, who emphasized that the data of more than 100 million individuals was at risk, now states that a bigger scandal has occurred and is awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation.

Minister Uraloğlu confirmed in his statements that some data was “unfortunately” obtained in certain ways during the pandemic. It is stated that this data leaked from the Ministry of Health’s system includes citizens’ identity information. However, no clear information was given on how large the size of this data leak was. Haskoloğlu’s statements make the situation even more serious.
Haskoloğlu, who was arrested in the early days of the data leak, criticized the authorities for not taking precautions in his statements. “When the data of 85 million people was stolen, I reported on it and told them to take precautions. You didn’t take precautions and arrested me,” said the journalist, and now he will file a lawsuit for compensation against those responsible. Haskoloğlu also stated that a much bigger incident had occurred regarding the data leak and that he would share the situation with the public once the investigation was completed.
