Effort To Improve Patient Records Is Drawing A Crowd

The need for better electronic patient records has gotten a lot of attention lately.But compiling all that data is just part of the battle. Doctors and patients still have to know what to do with those records.

So ActiveHealth Management, a unit of Aetna (NYSE:AEF) (NYSE:AET) AET, aims to go that extra step. It not only compiles data, it also analyzes all that information and often comes up with a diagnosis.

ActiveHealth uses health insurance claim records to gather a big chunk of its data. It combines those with health data it gets directly from patients, including weight, blood pressure, medications and eating habits.

The company aims to bridge gaps in care and prevent medical errors from taking place. One study showed the program cuts hospital costs by 6%, Reisman says. Fewer hospitalizations led to savings of $100 per member per year.
