As medical devices such as pacemakers, diabetics’ insulin pumps and even hospital equipment become increasingly advanced, they’ve become more dependent on networks — and increasingly vulnerable to cyberattack, experts say. Though there have been no known malicious attacks like the one in “Homeland,” the threat is out there, they say.
Those threats have caught the attention of the Food and Drug Administration, the federal agency that approves medical devices.
In October, the FDA released cybersecurity guidelines for medical device manufacturers, asking them to document how they’ve considered cybersecurity for products they submit for approval.
