Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho Public Notice of Email Error

Posted on September 1, 2016 by Dissent

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho posted this notice on their web site:

On June 28, 2016, some emails notifying individuals of an online portal were inadvertently sent to the wrong addresses. This caused individuals to receive another person’s email, which included the intended recipient’s first and last name. There was no other personal or health information in the email, and the recipient would not have been able to use the information to access the portal under another person’s name.

Upon discovery on June 28, we took action to assess the situation and shut down the portal. We immediately determined it was an isolated occurrence, and it was resolved promptly.  We have no evidence that any of the information involved in this incident has been misused in any way.

We are committed to ensuring individuals affected by this incident have the necessary information about this matter.  Those individuals who believe they could have been affected by the incident and would like to obtain more information can do so by calling 1-877-412-7146 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Saturday.

Privacy is a top priority for us, and we regret any confusion or concern this error has caused.  We are reinforcing existing privacy policies and technological protocols internally and with our partners, and are evaluating additional safeguards to prevent any similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The incident was reported to HHS on August 26th as affecting 10,700 patients.
