Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor is dealing with a possible data security breach that could impact thousands of students and staff up to 20 years ago.
School officials are notifying 42,000 current and former students, as well as employees, that certain computers on campus were recently infected with malware and may have been hacked.

Students possibly affected attended EMCC between the summer of 1998 through this summer.
Potential employees would have worked at the college between 2008 and 2018.

This is absolutely infuriating. Why was all that data on computers that were connected and could be hacked and data exfiltrated? Why hadn’t the data been moved offline? When was the last time the school needed to access information from a student who attended 20 years ago and the data absolutely had to be connected to the internet?
Or am I being unfair and too harsh?
