Police are investigating after confidential medical records were found by a member of the public in Coventry. He reported finding the highly sensitive documents dumped in a bin near the entrance of Coventry’s University Hospital.
The hospital and police have both launched inquiries into what happened.
The full medical records of a patient from the Cheylesmore area have since been handed in to police, who are also looking in to the incident.
The files contain information about a man in his 40s going back decades.
The documents included details of a number of intimate operations and medical conditions, including a vasectomy.
University Hospital has issued a full apology to the patient concerned.
University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust released a statement saying it believes the removal of the confidential records from the hospital was “a deliberate act”.
